a window is opened up at the crack of dawn, beside which one man is overlooking the the mess of buildings outside, breathing the fresh air cosily. but just after a little while, he steps to his seat, staring at the computer screen till the night. this man is very likely a programmer.

there is a man who concentrates on his computer, but doesnsquo;t care about however he dresses, or even whether he washes his face.

there is a man who has a good knowledge of computer language, but has a low eq and makes a bad relationship with others.

there is a man who stays at home and does his own work by himself day and night, but just has few friends.

these images shown above probably are what people think of programmers as, in fact, programmers indeed give us a bad impression sometimes. however, people just have a partial understanding of programmerssquo; life, not to mention that they can know the fun of programming. there is no doubt that programs affect all aspects of our lives in an obvious or potential way, especially they are reflected in electronic products that we use nowadays.

when you are so proud of possessing an iphone, yousquo;d better remember that it is the program that makes you get confidence to show off the advanced mobile phones thoroughly.

when you take advantage of computers to cope with problems in life, yousquo;d better remember that it is the program that makes you seek the convenience of computer.

when you neednsquo;t worry about hot summer and cold winter owing to an air-conditioner, yousquo;d better remember that it is the program that makes you share the machinesquo;s intelligent.

when you release your pressure by playing varies of online games, yousquo;d better remember that it is the program that makes you enjoy the great entertainment in life.

as peoplesquo;s thoughts control their bodies, computer programs play a leading role in the modern times. both social progress and human evolution depend on the computer programs. in the practical application, a software consists of different programs and then combines with hardware to develop into a high-tech electronic product. there are many kinds of electronic products found everywhere in our daily life. nearly all the time do we make use of these products to conduct our passion.

good morning, my honorable judges:

i feel so happy to have the chance to make a speech. the title of my speech is protect the environment. i hope you will like it.

everybody knows waste paper and used coke cans are discarded everywhere. you might have seen plastic bags flying in the sky and getting caught in the trees when the wind blows or maybe you have seen old cans floating in the rivers. our environment is the place which we live, but it is being ruined by us. there is a story about a house and trees. it is said that a mansquo;s house was surrounded by a lot of trees. though the wind was strong, that man could have a good rest under the trees. how comfortable the life was! one day, that man wanted to enlarge his house, so he cut down all the trees. then the autumn came without the protection. the strong wind blew the roof of the house into the sky. the whole house was gone with the wind. what a pity! but thatsquo;s the price people have to pay for destroying in the ecology balance.

people shouldnsquo;t be short-sighted. protecting the environment is everyonesquo;s task. as you know, there are four kinds of pollution. they are air pollution, water pollution, waste pollution and noise pollution. but what can we do to solve the pollution? i think, first, we can make cars that donsquo;t pollute the environment. second, we can try to use less water and make sure that we do not pollute the water. third, we should not throw rubbish in the parks. we can pick up rubbish if we see it. fourth, we can live far from the noise.

the air, water and the whole atmosphere directly influenced our lives, such as the air, people may cough and it will lead to cancer. so we must try our best to keep the world clean and tidy. you might ask yourself, have i ever picked up some rubbish and thrown it into a dustbin? have i ever collected waste paper or bottles for recycling? if your answers are yes, it means that you have already done something useful to improve the environment.

in order to make the environment clean, letsquo;s join our hands together to make the world better.

thank you!

the doors that are open to us

good morning ladies and gentlemen:

the title of my speech today is "the doors that are open to us ".

the other day my aunt paid me a visit. she was overjoyed. "i got the highest mark in the mid-term examination!" she said. don't be surprised! my aunt is indeed a student; to be exact, a college student at the age of 45.

last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college. "this was the wisest decision i have ever made," she said proudly like a teenage girl. to her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.

"compared with the late 70s," she says, "now college students have many doors." my aunt cannot help but recall her first college experience in 1978 when college doors began to be re-opened after the cultural revolution. she was assigned to study engineering despite her desire to study chinese literature, and a few years later, the government sent her to work in a tv factory.

i was shocked when she first told me how she (had) had no choice in her major and job. look at us today! so many doors are open to us! i believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today. and my aunt told me that we should reach our goals by grasping all these opportunities.

the first door i see is the opportunity to study different kinds of subjects that interest us. my aunt said she was happy to study management, but she was also happy that she could attend lectures on ancient chinese poetry and on shakespearean drama. as for myself, i am an english major, but i may also go to lectures on history. to me, if college education in the past emphasized specialization, now, it emphasizes free and well-rounded development of each individual. so all the fine achievements of human civilization are open to us.

the second door is the door to the outside world. learning goes beyond classrooms and national boundaries. my aunt remembers her previous college days as monotonous and even calls her generation "frogs in a well." but today, as the world becomes a global village, it is important that our neighbors and we be open-minded to learn with and from each other. i have many fellow international classmates, and i am applying to an exchange program with a university abroad. as for my aunt, she is planning to get an mba degree in the united kingdom where her daughter, my cousin, is now doing her master's degree in biochemistry. we are now taking the opportunity to study overseas, and when we come back, we'll put to use what we have learnt abroad.

the third door is the door to lifelong learning. as new ideas appear all the time, we always need to acquire new knowledge, regardless of our age. naturally, my aunt herself is the best example. many of my aunt's contemporaries say that she is amazingly up-to-date for a middle-aged woman. she simply responds, "age doesn't matter. what matters is your attitude. you may think it's strange that i am still going to college, but i don't think i'm too old to learn." yes, she is right. since the government removed the age limit for college admissions in 20xx, there are already some untraditional students, sitting with us in the same classrooms. like these people, my aunt is old but she is very young in spirit. with her incredible energy and determination, she embodies both tradition and modernity.

the doors open to us also pose challenges. for instance, we are faced with the challenge of a balanced learning, the challenge of preserving our fine tradition while learning from the west, and the challenge of learning continuously while carrying heavy responsibilities to our work and family. so, each door is a test of our courage, ability and judgment, but with the support of my teachers, parents, friends and my aunt, i believe i can meet the challenge head on. when i reach my aunt's age, i can be proud to say that i have walked through dozens of doors and will, in the remainder of my life, walk through many more. possibly i will go back to college, too.

thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.

everybody attention

so now i'd like to share with you what's in my suitcase today. guess what? books. i have a suitcase full of books. here's margaret atwood, cat's eye. here's a novel by milan kundera. and here's the guide for the perplexed by maimonides. but these are not exactly my books. i brought these books with me because they were written by my grandfather's favorite authors.

my grandfather was a rabbi and he was a widower who lived alone in a small apartment in brooklyn that was my favorite place in the world when i was growing up, partly because it was filled with his very gentle, very courtly presence and partly because it was filled with books. i mean literally every table, every chair in this apartment had yielded its original function to now serve as a surface for swaying stacks of books. just like the rest of my family, my grandfather's favorite thing to do in the whole world was to read.

but he also loved his congregation, and you could feel this love in the sermons that he gave every week for the 62 years that he was a rabbi. he would takes the fruits of each week's reading and he would weave these intricate tapestries of ancient and humanist thought. and people would come from all over to hear him speak.

but here's the thing about my grandfather. underneath this ceremonial role, he was really modest and really introverted -- so much so that when he delivered these sermons, he had trouble making eye contact with the very same congregation that he had been speaking to for 62 years. and even away from the podium, when you called him to say hello, he would often end the conversation prematurely for fear that he was taking up too much of your time. but when he died at the age of 94, the police had to close down the streets of his neighborhood to accommodate the crowd of people who came out to mourn him. and so these days i try to learn from my grandfather's example in my own way.

dear classmates,

every one of us, rich or poor, should at least have one or two good friends. my friends will listen to me when i want to speak, will wipe my eyes when i cry, will take care of me when i am sick, and my friends will go together with me side by side through this journey of life.

as students, we could share more time with our friends. the friendship in our young hearts is pure, fresh and simple. i often feel very lucky to have a lot of good friends. especially when i had justin as one of my best friends. justin was my english teacher from the usa. i met him in 1996 when i was a student who could only speak very little english. justin was a vivid young man with a bright smile on his face, and he always had his special way to make the class active and attractive. he taught us english by telling stories, playing games, singing songs, and even dancing. i could still remember very clearly that one afternoon when we fin-ished our class, we went to some other classes to sing songs for them, just like what people do in the states on christmas eve. it was so interesting and unforgettable. justin was an excellent teacher, because he taught us not only how to study english well, but also the way to find out the beauty of the world and the way to be angels to others' lives. i know there was friendship and pure love in our hearts. facing this valuable emotion neither nationality nor age was important, the real importance lay in faith, under-standing, and care. justin is the best friend i have ever had, and i know i will cherish those days of staying together with him as the best part of my memory.

friendship is a kind of treasure in our lives. it is actually like a bottle of wine, the longer it is kept, the sweeter it will be. it is also like a cup of tea. when we are thirsty, it will be our best choice, but when we have enough time to enjoy ourselves, it is also the most fragrant drink.

however, in this fast-developing modern society, the reality is not that. more and more people forget to enjoy the beauty of life and -the beauty of friendship. they work hard in order to gain a higher position, in the society and to earn more money for their work. of course, we don't deny that it is important to find a bet-ter place in our lives, but we wish more and more people could pay a little more attention to themselves and their friends. all of us have to spare some time for personal lives. we have to find the chance to express our emotion and love. when staying with our friends, we can release ourselves completely. we can do whatever we want, we can laugh together, talk together, and even cry to-gether. i should say that being together with our best friends is the most wonderful moment of our lives.

as we know, we would feel lonely if we didn't even have a friend. but it doesn't mean we could depend on our friends all the time. there is a famous motto saying that a friend is like a quilt with cotton wadding, but the real thing that keeps you warm is your own temperature. it is really true. we have to work hard together with our friends, encourage each other and help each other. when we receive love and friendship, we should repay as much as we can.

finally, let's pray together now that one day, all of us could find the person we want to find, and could enjoy a real beautiful friendship in our lives. let's pray the flower of friendship be-tween our friends and us would always bloom brightly in our hearts.

most people would like to be popular with others, but not everyone canachieve this goal. what is the secret to popularity? in fact, it is very simple.the first step is to improve our appearance. we should always make sure that westay in good shape and dress well. when we are healthy and well-groomed, we willnot only look better but also feel better. in addition, we should smile andappear friendly. after all, our facial expression is an important part of ourappearance. if we can do this, people will be attracted to our good looks andimpressed by our confidence.

another important step is developing more consideration for others. weshould always put others first and place their interests before our own. it'salso important to be good listeners; in this way people will feel comfortableenough to confide in us. however, no matter what we do, we must not gossip.above all, we must remember to be ourselves, not phonies. only by being sincereand respectful of others can we earn their respect. if we can do all of theabove, i am sure popularity will come our way.

what college education means to me

the title of my speech is what college education means to me.now reflecting on the past two and half years of my college experience, i come to realize how much it has shaped me.

for me, college education is a marvelous ship-builder who designed me from kneel plates up.

with great vision, college education has equipped me, first with a powerful propeller----the sophisticated knowledge in certain field and wide exposure to other disciplines. by dedicating myself to the engineering courses in the day and immersing myself in the rich banquet of the world literature at night, isquo;ve amassed the driving force for the future and enriched my soul.

besides, college education has also provided me with a precise compass----the sense of social responsibility. how can i best serve the interest of the public while achieving my self-fulfillment? my one yearsquo;s experience as a part-time english teacher has testified: to be valuable to society as well as to find my place, i have to possess some actual strength and the ability to function well in the most challenging situation. amid the hectic schedule that balances club activities, sports, and academic courses, i feel the rhythm and beauty in the intensity of my high-pitched life, knowing that i squo;m on the right way.

and more importantly, college education has set up not only single ships, but also fleets with common destinations. by interacting with friends of common beliefs, isquo;ve acquired skills of relating to other people.

now ,as a ship about to make my maiden voyage ,isquo;m still not in the position to tell whatsquo;s waiting ahead of me ,but with a powerful propeller, a precise compass and ardent companions of sailing in the sea of society, isquo;m ready to be a great sea-explorer.

thank you.
